Database software for open-source Unix OS
The
Empress Relational Database Management System (Empress RDBMS)
is now available on FreeBSD, the freely distributed, open source Unix operating system. The software package includes the ANSI-SQL Empress RDBMS, an Internet application dvelopment toolkit,
JDBC interface, ODBC server, and other companion products for development of database applications. The Empress RDBMS features unlimited storage capacity and the ability to store and retrieve virtually any type of data, from bulk object to variable length text to image and sound. Empress supports all major Unix, Windows NT, and real-time platforms for cross-platform development.

USB device driver development toolkit
WinDriver USB
is a universal serial bus device driver development toolkit developed by KRFTech. WinDriver USB enables developers to create high-performance device drivers for USB-based devices. It includes the Driver Wizard, which tests the USB hardware through a Windows
interface and generates the USB driver source code for the hardware device. Developers can create USB drivers without having to use the Microsoft Driver Development kit, and without any USB/OS knowledge. It provides user-mode APIs to the hardware, which can be called from within the application. Debugging can then be done with standard application-level debugging tools. After development and debugging, the WinDriver Kernel PlugIn (included) enables the developer to "drop" the user-mode code into the kernel. A beta
evaluation version of WinDriver USB is available at
www.unipress.com/cgi-bin/free_evals. The WinDriver USB toolkit costs $2,900.

Internet-enabling development kit with EMIT
The Network MicroConverter Kit
from Analog Devices incorporates the Internet-enabling EMIT software. The kit allows the integration of networking capabilities to a broad range of industries, including industrial automation and process control. The Network MicroConverter Kit is based on the
high-precision ADuC812 MicroConverter, a data acquisition system on a chip, which features an eight-channel, 12-bit accurate ADC, two 12-bit DACs, and an integrated flash microcontroller core on a single 520-lead PQFP device. Additional hardware on the kit1s PC board includes RS-232 and RS-485 line drivers/receivers that allow multi-drop serial communications to on-chip flash/EEPROM. The Network MicroConverter Kit is available for $99 through emWare1s emStore.

64-bit RISC processor
The VR4122 processor
is a high-speed,
integrated 64-bit RISC processor designed for high performance handheld portable computing devices and PCI-based systems such as network terminals, auto PCs, webphones, and other embedded systems. Also available is the VRC4173 companion chip, which integrates the primary peripheral functions needed to complete a system. The VR4122 device is claimed to achieve an operating speed of 180MHz through the use of 0.18-micron process and circuit optimization. Internal voltage is reduced to 1.8V. The 0.18-micron process
allows for the inclusion of high-capacity 32K instruction and 16K data caches and on-chip branch prediction. An on-chip memory interface is also included for direct connection with SDRAM, page ROM, and flash memory. The PCI bus is a subset version of the standard PCI Bus v. 2.1 and provides access to peripherals such as an LCD controller and graphics accelerator. Both chips are sampling now, with volume production scheduled for the second quarter. The VR4122 processor costs $33 each in 10,000-unit quantities.
The companion chip, the VRC 4173 controller, is $13 in the same quantities.
