Krishna K. Rangan of Harvard University and Gu-Yeon Wei & David Brooks of Intel Corp. in “Fine-grained power management for multi-core systems,” describe the limits of Dynamic voltage and frequency scaling for power management in multicore designs and describe an alterntive approach using a thread motion model to allow rapid movement of threads to adapt the time varying computing needs of running applications to a mixture of cores with fixed but different power/performance levels. The result is up to 20% better performance than coarse-grained dynamic voltage and frequency scaling (DVFS).
