Max The Magnificent-March 31, 2017

Out of all the things I look forward to at the Embedded Systems Conference (ESC), the keynote presentations are always at the top of the list, and the forthcoming ESC Boston 2017 will be no exception.

This event takes place Wednesday-Thursday, May 3-4. On Wednesday, we have Michael Barr, Co-Founder and CTO of the Barr Group, presenting his security-related keynote: Embedded Systems Safety & Security: Dangerous Flaws in Safety-Critical Device Design.

I have a particular interest in this topic at the moment -- there are so many security holes out there with bad players just waiting to sink their teeth into your sensitive parts (metaphorically speaking, of course) -- so this keynote is right at the top of my "must see" list.

The following day, we have Jason Crusan, who is Director of the Advanced Exploration Systems Division within the Human Exploration and Operations Mission Directorate, NASA. All I can say is that I'm glad I don’t have to (a) create Jason's business card layout and (b) introduce him and his keynote (I'd be gasping for breath before I was half-way through his title). I wonder how he answers when someone asks "So, what do you do?" at a party, but we digress...

I'm interested in anything and everything to do with space, so Jason's keynote -- Enabling the Next Era of Human Space Exploration -- has me quivering in antici...

...pation. As amazing and awe-inspiring as it was, the recent success of the New Horizons mission to Pluto just leaves me longing for more of the same (see also New Horizons & Pluto meet ESC & Kevin Bacon and I met my new MOM at ESC).

Jason's talk will outline the pioneering approaches that his group is using to develop prototype systems, advance key capabilities, and validate operational concepts for future human missions beyond Earth orbit. Once again, I cannot wait!

Both of these presentations are open to all ESC attendees, including those with Free Expo Passes, but you have to register to attend. Hopefully I'll see you there. I'll be the one in the Hawaiian shirt. As always, all you have to do if you see me strolling by is shout "Max, Beer!" or "Max, Bacon!" to be assured of my undivided attention.
