Poised on the brink of a new era…
Today could be a turning point, or it could just be another Monday. What I am talking about is the fact that the EDA DesignLine is in new hands. As of today, I am the new editor at EDA Designline; I will be assisted by my old friend Max the Magnificent, who is also the editor for the Programmable Logic DesignLine.
I can remember many years ago when the EDA section of EETimes was one of the most vibrant parts of that illustrious newspaper; at that time, some of the greatest editors and writers gathered around this field. Sadly, one-by-one they all left and went on to bigger and better things. Quality content declined and with it the EDA companies stopped providing much in the way of sponsorship. That, in turn, led to other editors and writers being let go or leaving to pursue more interesting areas. Today, almost unbelievably, EDA is close to becoming a forgotten corner of the EETimes universe and is in danger of slipping away completely.
But turn that frown upside down into a smile, because change is on the way – with Max’s help, I intend to turn EDA Designline around and returning it to be the vibrant community it should be.
So, here is our promise to you, the users of EDA tools. We will seek out news about companies, products, and methodologies and present them to you in an independent manner. We are not interested in just regurgitating press releases, but in providing unique content, critiques, opinions, and things that will make you think about how you are doing things today.
Similarly, we intend to talk about what you, the users, need from the EDA companies in order to be successful in your jobs. Where are your pain points? Where are the EDA companies failing you? Where do you need more, or less, of something? This is going to be a dialog – not just a one way monolog. As part of this, we are very interested in hearing from anyone who would like to contribute guest blogs on the site, or who just want to talk to us about the issues affecting you.
To the producers of EDA tools, we know that it has been a while since you had such a channel available to you and we need to gain your trust that we can make this work again, but at the same time we need you to step up to plate in supporting us. We need to have open dialogs; we need you to help us get real information out to your users. Time and time again, I have heard that one of the limiters to EDA tool adoption is education – well, here is your chance to help us, and we will do everything we can to turn that need into a reality.
Either Max or I may be knocking on your doors to find out ways that we can provide value, to find out what and how you would like to change EDA DesignLine. But don’t wait for us. Send us an email (brian_bailey@acm.org and/or max@CliveMaxfield.com), give us a call, and tell about your ideas, suggestions, plans for papers, blogs, or whatever else you want to do and we will work with you. This is your opportunity to get involved and be a part of returning this channel to its former glory.
