DESIGN West: Rise of The Floating City

March 29, 2012

Dolby_DesignWest.jpgDESIGN West in San Jose, CA -- Thomas Dolby wowed the packed house on Tuesday with his keynote speech that came complete with live musical performances.

For an enchanting stretch Dolby went into a dream-like sequence where he described his 2010 album A Map of the Floating City, which began life as an online game. From there, he dove directly into one of the songs from the album. Dolby has always been the epitome of cool, at least in my book. And listening to the story of how he envisioned the game and then flowed with its evolution just moved him even higher in the cool-o-meter.

As an interesting aside, Dolby recorded A Map Of The Floating City in the "Nutmeg Of Consolation", his recording studio built within a 1930s lifeboat and powered entirely by renewable energy. The studio is located in the garden of Dolby's beach house on England's North Sea coast.

In this video, you can hear his own explanation of the game. I apologize for poor video, but just listen to his description and you'll be mesmerized:
