Samsung Electronics Co. today unveiled a 128-megabyte NAND flash memory card, claimed to be the highest capacity on the market, for digital storage.

Called the SmartMediaa (sic) card, it can store up to 560 high-resolution photographs or 32 CD-quality songs. Mass production is expected to begin in early 2001-a full year earlier than originally projected for this density.

The SmartMediaa card contains four NAND 128-megabit flash chips, built on 0.18-micron design rules. Until now, Samsung's cards contained two NAND flash chips, but the 0.18-micron shrink now allows four chips in the card.

Samsung officials in Seoul estimated that the company's NAND flash memory revenues will reach $1 billion in 2002.
