Amazon attempts to block Kindle Fire hack
SAN FRANCISCO--No sooner had the Kindle Fire tablet been hacked to allow access to the Google Android market, Amazon Inc. has released required software updates for the device which effectively block the root file, dismantling the hack, and which also force the device to update over Wifi only.
The update, which takes the Kindle Fire software package to version 6.2., removes the hack, though the community over at XDA has quickly found a way to put it back on, using the same SuperOneClick software it initially used.
Re-rooting the Kindle might delete the Android Market app and any custom keyboards a user might have installed, but it won’t wipe any other downloaded apps, according to threads on the forum. Market can then be re-installed once root access has been restored.
It seems Amazon is playing a game of cat and mouse with device software hack aficionados on this one, but whether fighting Amazon Fire with Fire will help remains to be seen.
