Lime Microsystems enables a Universal Wireless FPGA-based Communications Toolkit

The folks from Lime Microsystems have announced a Universal Wireless Communications Toolkit that allows developers to create wireless protocols of almost any complexity with ease. The kit is based on Lime’s configurable transceiver and Altera FPGAs with a bespoke board to link the two boards.

Editor’s Note: I have to say that I think this is the very first time I’ve ever seen the work “bespoke” used in a subhead … it makes me feel homesick for the Yorkshire Dales! As a totally unrelated point, the company name Lime led me to wonder if you ever saw my blog Am I a Limey, a Pom, a Sassenach, or a Sayip? But we digress…

The Toolkit comprises Lime's configurable transceiver board linked to an Altera FPGA design kit via a purpose-built high speed mezzanine connection (HSMC) interface board. The combination of Lime and Altera boards enables almost any wireless application to be easily created, from consumer and enterprise broadband equipment through to bespoke white space, military and GNU Radio applications.

Communication system designs can be quickly implement in Altera's portfolio of 28-nm FPGAs, which are tailored to meet a variety of system requirements. Altera's 28-nm FPGAs include its Stratix V FPGAs, targeting high-performance systems; Arria V FPGAs, targeting mid-range applications that require a mix of low power and high performance; and Cyclone V FPGAs, targeting low-power, cost-sensitive applications.

"Leveraging Lime's Universal Wireless Communications Toolkit along with our family of tailored 28-nm FPGAs allows designers to rapidly create communications systems optimized for their specific requirements."

Lime's LMS6002D is a fully integrated multi-band, multi-standard single-chip RF transceiver for 3GPP (WCDMA/HSPA and LTE), 3GPP2 (CDMA2000) and WiMAX applications. It can be digitally configured to operate in 16 user-selectable bandwidths up to 28MHz. In addition to small cell base stations, Lime's customers are using the IC to create machine to machine (M2M), GNU radio and white space radio applications.

The Lime HSMC interface and transceiver boards are available via Lime Microsystems, with FPGA design kits available from Altera.
