Single chip provides mobile phones with high-quality stereo audio music, background noise reduction, and Bluetooth wireless connectivity
CSR has introduced a single-chip stereo audio processor for mobile phones that combines MP3 playback capability, background noise reduction and Bluetooth connectivity. According to the company, the MusiCore1 processor saves cost, space and power by avoiding the need for a separate audio processor in phone designs using both Bluetooth and audio processing.
Based on the Kalimba 64-MIPS DSP, which provides high-quality stereo Bluetooth voice and music inside the company's BlueCore Multimedia product range, MusiCore1 offers audio quality comparable to standalone MP3 players. Specifications include a 95-dB SNR, 30 dB of dynamic background noise reduction, and a Bluetooth latency of 40 ms.
Decoding of all mainstream music file formats is supported, including MP3, AAC, AAC+, WMA and SBC. MusiCore1 uses 5.25 mW to process an MP3 file compared to 80 mW used by a phone's CPU for the same decoding, and can provide a phone with 100 hours of music playback. The phone CPU can remain asleep when MusiCore1 is handling music files.
"End-users are demanding MP3 as a function in phones but currently not using it because processing MP3 eats too much power." commented Matthew Philips, Senior Vice President of CSR's Mobile Handset Connectivity strategic business unit, "MusiCore1 addresses this by presenting low power but high-quality stereo audio processing to give 100 hours of music playback, high-quality voice enhancements and added Bluetooth wireless connectivity."
Samples of the 3.8 x 4.8-mm CSP or BGA packages are available now with volume production planned for September.
