Windows XP Embedded is a componentized version of the Windows XP operating system that targets connected applications such as retail point-of-sale devices, thin clients, gaming systems, self-service kiosks, industrial automation, residential gateways, and advanced set-top boxes. Based on the same features as Windows XP Professional, Windows XP Embedded offers developers pre-built configurations and 10,000 components with which developers can create their own configuration of the operating system. Windows XP Embedded comes in footprints ranging from 4.8MB for a minimum configuration, 14MB for a basic Win32 system, 25MB for a basic Win32 system with security infrastructure, to 70MB for the Win32 API set with the user interface, Microsoft Internet Explorer 6.0, Windows Media Player 8.0, Terminal Server client, USB support, and SNMP support. Developers can order a free evaluation copy of Windows XP Embedded on the Web. The evaluation copy provides a version of the tools and the operating system binaries that allows developers to build prototypes and test their Windows XP Embedded images. The embedded images created with the evaluation edition carry a 120-day expiration date after the first boot of the device. A two-day training program for Windows XP Embedded is being offered for embedded developers and systems integrators. Windows XP Embedded is available now.
