Targeting applications such as video-over-IP, video-on-demand, and multi-channel digital video recording, the TMS320DM642 is a programmable, 500MHz to 600MHz digital media processor. Object code-compatible with the C64x family of DSPs, it offers on-chip, high-definition-capable video ports, glueless Ethernet, multi-channel audio, and 66MHz PCI connectivity. The company claims that the DM642 is capable of processing up to four simultaneous MPEG2 video decodes, D1 resolution, at 30 frames per second. It also claims that the DM642 is also capable of main-profile-at-main-level MPEG-2 video encoding in real time. Numerous DSP algorithms are available from Texas Instruments and its third party affiliates. Samples will be available in the first quarter of 2003. Volume production is scheduled to begin in the third quarter. The 500MHz DM642 will cost $44.95 in quantities of 10,000.
