iPod Touch Teardown Reveals Bluetooth Chip

A breakdown of the new iPod Touch shows the portable media player has a Bluetooth chip, a feature not mentioned by Apple chief executive Steve Jobs in introducing the device this week.

The breakdown performed by iFixit, a site dedicated to helping people repair their own Macs and PCs, found that the second-generation iPod Touch has a Broadcom BCM4325 Bluetooth chip.

Because the device does not offer standard Bluetooth wireless communications with other devices, it's assumed the chip is used to communicate with Nike running shoes equipped with a sensor for tracking a person's run. The sensor and receiver and software for the iPod are sold as accessories by Apple. The equipment communicates on the same 2.4 GHz as Bluetooth.

IFixit also reported Wednesday that the iPod Touch speaker, a new feature, is less than nine hundredths of an inch thick and is mounted on the device's metal back plate. In introducing the feature Tuesday, Jobs warned that the speaker was not for "audiophiles."

IFixit also tore down the new iPod Nano and found that it had the same resolution and physical size as the previous-generation Nano. The new fourth-generation Nano has an updated Samsung ARM processor capable of running new games for the device.

IFixit said it plans to provide replacement parts and repair instructions for both iPods. The site also offers Fixit Guides online for all the other iPod models and Mac notebooks.

Jobs launched the refreshed iPod line and an upgrade of the iPhone and iPod Touch operating system during a media event held in San Francisco. The operating system upgrade fixed some nagging bugs and is expected to extend the device's battery life.
