- The hackers versus engineers quandary
The term "Hacker" has taken on a malicious connotation. Really, it just refers to someone who explores software through experimental cause and effect observations. Hackers are sort of Empirical Engineers and they arrive at the same conclusions through different means. My college education in Computer Science, which consisted of mostly Fortran on Paper Tape and Punch Cards, helped me not at all in the world of embedded microprocessors. When I decided that was what I wanted to do, the only option was to "hack" my way through various designs and figure it out for myself. Today, I'm an "Engineer", but when there's a new technique or system to learn, the Inner Hacker (old, non-malicious definition) still comes back to the surface. It keeps life interesting!
