    • My Audi A4 once engaged in uncontrolled acceleration. I have been driving for 4 decades, every type of vehicle. I was not "confused" between the brake and the accelerator. My car accelerated in an uncontrolled fashion all by itself. Because it is controlled by computers, and computers fail. Period. I concur with the poster who noted that engineers (and *I* am an engineer) are overwhelmingly prone to believe "that just can't happen" even when it does. The fact that the specific testimony and evidence presented in that trial may not have conclusively proven the contention is to my mind not that relevant--the fact they didn't find or present the correct flaw or failure mode doesn't change my belief that there was a flaw or failure. Apart from something like stuck floor mats or such (which I believe were always ruled out of these cases) a system flaw or failure is the only other reasonable explanation. Systems controlled by computers fail and mis-behave all the time, including billion dollar space programs--why anyone should have trouble believing a car computer could malfunction is beyond me
