1.5-A battery charger lowers design costs
The SC804, a linear, single-cell Lithium-Ion battery charger with battery pack and adapter flexibility features, supports lower design costs for portable devices. Developed by Semtech, the device integrates a cold temperature offset (CTO) pin that lets designers adjust the charging temperature range with a simple external resistor divider. With this ability, one board design can be used in multiple applications that require different temperature range limitations for charging.
The SC804 has a 3- to 14-V input voltage range. The maximum voltage level better protects systems from transients introduced from 12-V adapter overshoots, or from the use of improper third-party adapters. Under-voltage lock-out (UVLO) has been lowered to 3 V so it will work well with current-limited adapters.
As a fully integrated device, the SC804 features an FET pass transistor, reverse-blocking diode, sense resistor, and thermal protection. Other features include an integrated timer and programmable pre-charge, fast-charge, and termination current settings. It can also be configured as general-purpose current source for charging NiCd or NiMH batteries.
Two variants of the device are available supporting different output voltages. The SC804 base device features a 4.2-V output and the SC804A features a 4.357-V output. Both are packaged in 4- by 4-mm MLPQ lead-free packages that comply with the European Union’s RoHS directive.
The SC804 is available immediately in production quantities and is priced at $1.43 each in 1000-piece lots. Evaluation boards for both versions are also available. More information is available at www.semtech.com.
