10GbE serial transceiver employs DSP equalizer technology

Irvine, Calif.—Broadcom Corp. has started to sample the BCM8706, a low-power serial 10-Gigabit Ethernet (10GbE) transceiver that leverages its DSP technology.

The BCM8706 DSP-based 10GbE serial transceiver is designed to enable IT professionals to preserve their existing multi-mode and single-mode fiber infrastructures by providing an upgrade path from 1GbE to 10GbE.

The BCM8706 10GbE serial transceiver employs advanced DSP equalizer technology that supports Electronic Dispersion Compensation (EDC) over multimode fiber (MMF). The EDC equalizer is designed for applications over MMF covering distances up to 220m of OM1, OM2, OM3 fiber as per the IEEE standard. The BCM8706 will be fully compliant with the IEEE802.3aq standard. In enhanced performance mode, the BCM8706 is capable of supporting up to 300m over OM1, OM2, and OM3 fiber.

An onboard microcontroller implements the control algorithm for the MMF EDC DSP Core. On-chip clock synthesis is performed by the high-frequency low-jitter phase-locked loops for the PMD and XAUI output retimers. Individual PMD and XAUI clock recovery is performed on the device by synchronizing directly to the respective incoming data streams. An external 25-MHz or 156.25-MHz oscillator is required for the reference clock input.

The BCM8706 10GbE (SFP+ to XAUI) transceiver will be used in SFP+ line card applications and inside X2 optical modules. In support of the new SFP+ optical module standard, the BCM8706 product family incorporates multi-tap transmit pre-emphasis to compensate for FR-4 board material loss in line card applications. For additional flexibility, it supports backward compatibility using existing 1GbE SFP modules, providing a single PHY design that is capable of interfacing to both new and legacy Ethernet interfaces from a single PCB design.

The BCM8706 90-nm device is available in a 13-mm x 13-mm, PBGA, RoHS-compliant package and is compliant to all serial 10GbE interfaces, including 10GBASE-SR, 10GBASE-LRM, 10GBASE-LR and 10GBASE-ER.

Volume production is scheduled for the second quarter of 2007. The cost for the BCM8706 is $60 each in low volume quantities. Click here for a product brief in PDF format: www.broadcom.com/collateral/pb/8706-PB00-R.pdf.
