LONDON Abacus Group is paying £2million in cash to acquire Telecom Design Communications (TDC), a communications specialist distribution business based in Basingstoke.
TDC, which had sales of £4million in its last financial year, will continue to operate as a separate company within the Abacus Group. Jerry Sandys will continue as managing director of TDC reporting to Graham McBeth, managing director of Abacus ECD.
TDC is a technical component distributor specialising in wireless and GPS components and modems and multimedia. It was founded in 1992 as a design house for modem based products and was privately owned by three shareholders; all electronic engineers; all working in the company. TDC engineers have been involved in the communications business since 1984, and with GPS since its commercial introduction in 1990. In 1993 it picked up its first franchises for Xecom and Rockwell Semiconductor Systems. It now has over 20 franchised lines and recently picked up the SMART Modular Technologies Bluetooth line .
Martin Kent, CEO of Abacus Group, said, “TDC brings to the Group a number of excellent niche franchises including Conexant and Navman and significantly strengthens our relationship with Siemens Wireless Modules. We believe that TDC has excellent products and people combined with good knowledge and experience and which will strengthen the Group’s Embedded Systems capability.”
Sandys added, “As part of Abacus, we are able to offer our franchises greater customer reach and market access, and our customers the benefit of the backing of an international, listed company.”
