ARM focus to boost Silica’s MCU market share

Semiconductor distributor Silica, a European-based Avnet Inc. company, has launched the Core ’n More program to provide a focus for the company’s portfolio of microcontroller solutions, tools, software support and design-in services.

Core ’n More is based around the company's franchises which supply ARM-based microcontrollers which include Texas Instruments, NXP, Freescale, STMicroelectronics and Cypress. It also supplies MCUs from Microchip, Renesas and Intel.

The initiative builds on extended services including sales and engineering support from an extensive network of factory trained and certified field applications engineers. Silica is also partnering with companies who provide modules and engineering support for development systems, including compilers, debuggers, simulators, emulators and development boards.

According to Karlheinz Weigl, Avnet's regional Vice President Central Europe, Silica's overall semiconductor market share in Europe in the third quarter of 2010 was around 15 percent but its share of the MCU market was 9.25 percent and the Core 'n More strategy is to raise the MCU share to 15 percent by January 2014.

The three year plan will focus on Germany, UK, Italy and France training has already taken place for its field applications engineers which number over 70. The 150 account managers have also received MCU training and the company is setting up a European software enablement team with an expert in each geography. An appointment has already been mad in Germany with other posts close to being filled.
