ATV’s recalled as modules overheat

LONDON — Polaris Industries (Medina, Minn.) is having to recall around 95 000 of its all-terrain vehicles (ATVs)Expands Recall of ATVs due to fire hazard in defective electronic control modules (ECM).

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission said consumers should stop using recalled products immediately unless otherwise instructed. The company had to recall 45,000 units June 2005 due to a similar problem.

Since the original recall announced in June 2005, Polaris has received 372 additional reports of smoking and/or melted ECMs on the recalled ATVs, and 20 reports of fires, nine of which involved property damage beyond the ATV. No injuries have been reported.

This recall involves some Polaris Sportsman and Scrambler 500 ATVs sold in 2005 and 2006.

It is unclear if the recall affects units sold outside the U.S.
