BOARDS – Intel Core2 Duo based 3U CompactPCI Plus SBC targets high rel apps

Ambler, Pa. – MEN Micro Inc. has just introduced what it claims is the first 3U Intel-based single board computer (SBC) that conforms to the new PICMG 2.30 CompactPCI PlusIO standard.

The new standard adds serial functions on the J2 rear I/O connector in CompactPCI systems for added flexibility and versatility as well as easier system upgrades.

MEM Micro's F19P adheres to the known CompactPCI (PICMG 2.0) standard, while providing a migration path to the new serial CompactPCI Plus standard (PICMG CPLUS.0) to enable the board's use in CompactPCI-only systems and in hybrid systems using both CompactPCI and CompactPCI Plus.

Available with a range of Intel processors, from the 2.26 GHz Core 2 Duo SP9300 to the 1.20 GHz Celeron M 722, and dissipating between 5.5 Watts and 25 Watts, the 32-bit/33-MHz SBC was especially developed for numerous low power embedded applications with high performance and reliability requirements.

An integrated graphics controller on the Intel GS45 Express Chipset makes the F19P especially suited for applications needing not only high graphics performance, but also for monitoring or control as well as test and measurement. The F19P's specially developed heat sink and soldered components meet shock and vibration requirements to enable the board's use in mobile applications.

The new board offers a number of I/O options per PICMG 2.30, including four USB 2.0 ports, four fast SATA/SAS ports, four PCI Express x1 links and one Gigabit Ethernet port via the J2 rear I/O connector. In addition, the F19P supports seven PCI Express x1 links for fast communication: three for onboard Ethernet and four x1 links, or one x4 link via the rear I/O or a special side card.

Backwards-compatible with the MEN Micro SBC F14 to F18 family, the F19P front I/O includes a VGA connector for graphics as well as two Gigabit Ethernet and two USB 2.0 ports. Special extension cards extend the board's I/O functions to include digital video inputs via DVI as well as a multitude of UARTs, USBs, SATA and HD audio.

Equipped with up to 8 GB of the new fast DDR3 DRAM soldered for high shock and vibration resistance as well as with a robust CompactFlash/MicroSD card, the SBC offers nearly unlimited space for application data.

Different watchdogs for monitoring the processor and board temperature complete the SBC's functionality, and all components are prepared for coating against dust and humidity. The F19P ships with board support packages for Windows, Linux and VxWorks. By using special components from the Intel Embedded Line, the board has a guaranteed minimum availability of seven years.

PICMG 2.30 CompactPCI PlusIO complements the basic PICMG 2.0 CompactPCI standard by providing the migration path between CompactPCI Plus (PICMG CPLUS.0) and CompactPCI. This extension defines the J2 pin assignment while introducing a new, 100% compatible high-speed connector requiring only a few additional ground signals, so a high number of interfaces can be led to the backplane. The parallel PCI bus remains unchanged, but is limited to a data bus width of 32 bits.

PICMG 2.30 can be used for both 3U and 6U systems. A board supporting CompactPCI PlusIO remains 100% compatible with the CompactPCI standard, so it can be used without limitations in existing systems.
