Broadcom delivers the 7.2-Mbit/s HSDPA processor

Fully compliant to the High-Speed Downlink Packet Access (HSDPA) standard, Broadcom's latest baseband processor integrates a complete Category 8 HSDPA modem that delivers 7.2-Mbits/s connectivity, advanced DSP and multimedia functionality (for recording and playback of video and audio), and a high-performance ARM11 applications processor. The processor is part of the company's CellAirity platform family and is backward compatible with all flavors of legacy GSM cellular connectivity including WCDMA, EDGE, GPRS, and GSM.

The BCM2152 is housed in a 14- by 14-mm IC. It features hardware acceleration blocks for both modem and multimedia, in addition to the ARM processor. Support is included for Bluetooth and Wi-Fi interfaces, a 5-Mpixel camera, multimedia encode and decode at 30 frames/s at CIF or QVGA resolutions, 64-voice polyphonic ring tones, and integrated audio amplifiers to support full duplex speaker phones. The BCM2152 processor also includes security mechanisms to enable standard digital rights management (DRM) protocols.

The BCM2152 HSDPA mobile phone processor is now sampling to early access customers and is priced at $30 each for 10,000 quantities. More information is available at www.broadcom.com.
