Las Vegas, Nev.Broadcom Corp. announced its first Power over Ethernet (PoE), products featuring two highly integrated power sourcing equipment (PSE) controllers.
The 4-port PoE controllers provide power to networked devices in enterprise, small-to-medium-sized business (SMB) or residential environments using the Ethernet cable infrastructure that is already in place for transferring voice, video and data.
According to Broadcom, the BCM59101 (IEEE802.3af-compliant) and the BCM59103 (pre-IEEE802.3at) controllers provide a highly integrated, single-chip design that results in 30% fewer components and easier PCB layout than any competitive products.
The BCM59101 is a highly integrated, 4-port IEEE802.3af-compliant PoE device, delivering 15.4 watts per port, while the BCM59103 is a highly integrated, 4-port pre-IEEE802.3at PoE device.
The BCM59101 and BCM59103 are pin-compatible, enabling OEMs to adopt the BCM59101 as a cost effective, baseline 802.3af-compliant product. For applications that require higher power, the BCM59103 can be dropped into the BCM59101 footprint to provide 37 watts per port, expanding the applications for Ethernet switches by enhancing the wattage available for such high power applications as 802.11n wireless access points, video and security technologies.
The BCM59103 goes beyond the original IEEE802.3af specification to provide 37 watts per port, for higher powered wireless, video and securitytechnologies.
According to Broadcom, the BCM59101 and BCM59103 Power over Ethernet controllers offer unique features that set it apart from the competition, including integrated power MOSFETS, a highly efficient DC-to-DC controller, AC disconnect and LED control circuitry. Additionally, these PoE controllers eliminate the power-hungry sensing resistors previously required on each port.
The integrated microcontroller unit (MCU) in both the BCM59101 and BCM59103 allows dynamic power management and addresses L2 classification and other timing control requirements.
The BCM59101 and BCM59103 are each manufactured in a high voltage silicon process technology from Broadcom's technology partner AMI Semiconductor (AMIS), which provides customers in the automotive, medical, industrial, military/aerospace and communications markets with optimal high voltage process semiconductor products.
