Chandler, Ariz.MPLAB C30 Version 2 from Microchip Technology Inc. is a highly optimized ANSI-compliant C cross-compiler, cross-assembler, linker, and librarian, touting comprehensive libraries and extended functions. The compiler suite works with all of Microchip's high-performance 16-bit PIC24 microcontroller and dsPIC digital signal controller families. Moreover, the compiler's unique language extensions help build DSP functions from C programming statements.
The MPLAB C30 compiler accommodates both in-line assembly code in C source files and separately assembled MPLAB ASM30 assembly language modules. Integrated assembly support results in highly optimized interrupt routines, precision peripheral control; and efficient, high-speed assembly language functions.
All C library functions conform to the ANSI C library standard. Functions include those for string manipulation; dynamic memory allocation; data conversion; timekeeping; and trigonometric, exponential, and hyperbolic math. The library also includes functions for handling file I/O operations.
The MPLAB C30 works closely with the MPLAB integrated development environment (available free of charge) for writing code, building projects, and testing with Microchip's high-speed simulator, as well as with the MPLAB ICD 2 in-circuit debugger. Devices can be programmed from the same MPLAB interface using the debugger or, for volume production, the MPLAB PM3 programmer.
The compiler suite also lets you construct large and small code and data models. Small code models benefit from the suite's efficient call and branch instructions, while small data models exploit compact instructions for accessing data in 16-bit processors.
A student edition of MPLAB C30 offers the same functions as the standard version for 60 days, after which its code optimization decreases. However, the student version maintains full source-code compatibility and device support with no limits on program or data memory.
MPLAB C30 Version 2 is available now and sells for $895. For owners of previous versions of MPLAB C 30, a free download and user's guide is available from the company Website. The Student Edition can also be downloaded free of charge.
