Center aids power design

London, UK — Fairchild Semiconductor is investing $1 million in staff, premises and equipment to set up and fund the first year's operation of a European power design and application lab based in Fuerstenfeldbruck, Germany.

The European Center of Excellence will provide power design solutions for electronic applications in the principal European end markets industrial, consumer and automotive. The facility is headed by Dr. Michael Weirich and has 14 qualified systems and applications engineers, and four component engineers.

The company says the centre has already achieved a reduction in part count in a colour TV power supply from 200 to 60 devices, a 60 percent reduction in board space for an automotive ignition control system, and implementing an ultra-slim power supply design for an LCD TV.

Able to turn around designs as quickly as two weeks, the Fuerstenfeldbruck Center will provide customers with engineered solutions including demo boards, detailed information for bill-of-materials‚ and turnkey designs including Orcad and GerberEx files that can be incorporated into their own solutions, and application notes.

The Fuerstenfeldbruck lab is one of six such centers opened by Fairchild worldwide.
