LONDON Bosch Rexroth, congatec and two other European manufacturers of embedded computer modules have defined the 'COMPACT' miniature computer module based on the COM Express connector and signal definition.
The PCI Industrial Computer Manufacturers Group (PICMG) defines anything below 170 x 170sq mm to be small while the PICMG COM Express specification defines two module sizes; extended (155 x 110sq mm) and the basic (125 x 95sq mm).
The COMPACT version, based on the COM Express Typ 2, measures 95 x 95sq mm. Pins and mechanics are 100% compatible with the PICMG COM Express specification. The board itself is one third shorter and therefore can be much more easily integrated into systems. Bosch Rexroth and Congatec both want COMPACT to be adopted as an additional PICMG COM Express definition.
The COMPACT will offer a maximum of 22 PCI Express Lanes, Serial ATA, USB 2.0 and Gigabit Ethernet. The parallel PCI Bus will still be maintained thereby allowing a smooth upgrade to todays fastest serial buses.
