Database to detail defects in components and assemblies

LONDON — The National Physical Laboratory's Electronics Interconnection Group is creating a defects database as part of their continuing support to the electronics industry.

The database was suggested as an industry project by members of the Industry Advisory Group, recommending that NPL were best equipped to coordinate the activity due to their scientific and manufacturing expertise.

Davide Di Maio of the Industry & Innovation Division at NPL believes that collecting together common problems and making example images freely available to industry will assist engineers implement corrective actions in their process or design.

NPL are circulating three surveys — covering pc board manufacturers/distributors/brokers, component manufactures and distributors, and printed board assembly companies — to establish the most common problems experienced or highlighted.
