LONDON DT Electronics has signed a franchise deal with SMSC, a manufacturer of high-speed connectivity ICs for use in PCs and embedded applications.
The Coventry-based distributor will focus on selling SMSC's Ethernet and USB controllers into embedded applications within its broadcast, communications and industrial customer base. The company sees increasing demand for high performance peripherals to complement its portfolio of microcontrollers from Atmel and OKI.
Gerry Hewitt, marketing director at DT, said, “While there is something of a trend for connectivity to be included within microcontrollers, for maximum performance and design flexibility, very many designs still benefit from external communications peripherals. This product line meets that need with best-in-class devices. Our customers will have confidence in products that are present in virtually all of the world's leading PCs. SMSC produces high enough volumes to ensure that their devices are competitive in both performance and price.”
SMSC's European sales manager, Franz Exenberger, added, “We are a niche player providing products with market-leading performance. However, with a focused product line we can't attract worthwhile attention from the major broadline distributors. DT Electronics has had demonstrable success in achieving design wins of substantial value across its customer base for both broadline and narrow-line semiconductor manufacturers. We also want to ensure that we are addressing as much of the market as possible and the appointment of DT will facilitate significant expansion of our UK customer base.”
