SOFTWARE TOOLS: IntervalZero releases two versions of multicore RTX Real-Time
Waltham, Ma. - IntervalZero has just released two new versions of RTX deterministic, hard real-time software " RTX 2009, and RTX 2009 SMP, which includes support for symmetric multiprocessing.
According to IntervalZero CEO Jeffrey Hibbard said RTX 2009 SMP is "one of the essential components in a powerful new Soft-Control Architecture that is changing the basis of competition" for OEMs in the Industrial Automation, Medical Systems, Digital Audio Workstation, and Test and Measurement markets.
At the core of the Soft-Control Architectures, he said, is an Integrated Real-Time Development Platform comprising Microsoft Windows, multiprocessor x86 architectures, and RTX 2009 SMP, which provides both real-time operating system functionality as an extension to Windows, and real-time symmetric multiprocessing.
By leveraging RTX 2009's native SMP support on multiprocessor architectures, and its tight integration with the Windows environment, Hibbard claims that developers can move the hard real-time control logic, such as PLC or motion logic, from specialized hardware components to software components.
The software runs on multi-core, industrial-strength commodity x86 processors and uses both Open Standards and Standard Communications Architectures, such as USB and real-time Ethernet.
Applications that will benefit most from a Soft-Control Architecture, Hibbard said, are those that have complex Human-Machine Interfaces and require both the precise coordination of multiple tasks, and the deterministic hard real-time performance that RTX delivers. He also said that a Soft-Control Arcitecture enables OEMs to take full advantage of innovative technologies and industry trends.
RTX 2009 includes support for real-time operations on one shared or dedicated RTX processor in a uniprocessor or multiprocessor environment. RTX 2009 SMP can operate on one shared board, or up to seven dedicated RTX processors in a multicore/multiprocessor environment.
Support of multiple real-time threads running concurrently on multiple processors in a single system allows end users to create more powerful solutions, while reducing hardware costs and physical footprint.
RTX 2009, and RTX 2009 SMP are supported on Windows Vista, up through SP2; Windows XP, up through SP3; and Windows Embedded Standard 2009. RTX 2009 and RTX 2009 SMP also support Visual Studio 2008.
