Rad-hard digital isolators debut for small satellites

The passive-input ISL71610M and active-input ISL71710M digital signal isolators from Renesas provide isolation voltage of 2500 V RMS for 1 minute and 600 V RMS continuous. These radiation-tolerant devices afford protection against high-voltage spikes in power supply stages and serial communication interfaces employed in small satellites designed for low Earth orbit.

According to the manufacturer, the giant magnetoresistive digital isolators offer strong performance across key electrical specifications, including isolation voltage, data rate, common mode transient immunity, propagation delay, quiescent current, and dynamic current. They are characterization tested at a total ionizing doze of up to 30 krads(Si) and for single event effects at a linear energy transfer of 43 MeV-cm2/mg.
