Elma buys Mektron to expand U.K. presence

LONDON — Elma Electronic Group has acquired Mektron Systems of Bedford, a supplier of rugged system enclosures.

The Elma Group has it's headquarters in Wetzikon, Switzerland with production facilities in Switzerland, Germany and the USA as well as company owned sales organisations in Switzerland, Germany, U.S., France, Great Britain and Israel. It designs, develops and manufactures system platforms, electronic enclosures and components, backplanes, switches, knobs and LEDs.

Mektron Systems is a developer and producer of high-end electronic packaging systems and specialist products for the COTS, defence and high-availability sector. The company has been a forerunner in providing COTS system enclosure solutions and over the last 10 years has built a strong market position.

The founding directors of Mektron Systems were Jim Anthony and Bob Amos and in its 2004 financial year Mektron had 70 employees reported a turnover of £5million. Anthony said, “We are delighted to be part of a wider family, Elma offers the strength of a larger company with a corporate view that will substantially enhance our business position with our customer base and will enable the business to grow with the right infrastructure around us.”

Martin Blake, Managing Director of Elma Electronic UK, said, “The acquisition was made to strengthen our position in the UK market, with the aim of furthering our specialisation as a solutions provider in high value market segments. Mektron has the technical capability coupled with the flexibility and innovation to meet the widely diverse design needs of customers, and this is exactly what we require to strengthen our UK presence.”

Elma Electronic UK have been growing rapidly with their standard range of products and have recently been developing good business from the systems level COTS products for the defence sector. This acquisition has significantly enhanced Elma’s UK manufacturing facilities and has added substantially to the group’s overall engineering capabilities.
