Embedded Linux suite adds Windows host

MontaVista Linux Professional Edition 3.1 (Pro), an embedded operating system (OS) and development platform, has been upgraded with an integrated graphical development environment, Windows-based hosting, and updates to core system components. Pro is designed for use in applications for managed infrastructure and networking, medical/imaging, instrumentation and control, consumer electronics, aerospace and defense, and other markets.

The integrated development environment (IDE), dubbed DevRocket 1.0, is built on Java-based Eclipse technology, which offers a choice of targets and host platforms, including Linux, Solaris, and Windows. In addition to integrating development activities, such as compilation, editing, debugging, and revision control, DevRocket supports integration of third party Eclipse development tools and components and also lets developers configure and build platform images with project wizards.

New to this version is support for Microsoft Windows 2000 and XP workstations. Previously, MontaVista supported only Linux and Solaris hosts. This new capability addresses the wide use of Windows as an embedded development host. MontaVista also developed technology for the creation of embedded Linux file systems, device nodes, and target images from Windows and extended its networked cross development model to Windows.

Pro 3.1 is based on the 2.4.20 Linux kernel and includes MontaVista technology enhancements and components that the company says will become standard with the upcoming 2.6 kernel. Other new features include support for IPv6 built on USAGI project technology, and support for VLAN (Virtual Local Area Networks) configuration. Pro 3.1 also incorporates real-time capabilities such as POSIX timers, the O(1) real-time scheduler, and a fully preemptible kernel. Pro 3.1 also extends support for the GNU tool chains based on GDB 6.0 and GCC 3.3.

MontaVista Linux Professional Edition 3.1, incorporating the DevRocket IDE, will be available from MontaVista and its distribution channels Q4, 2003. It is offered as a product subscription that includes the Linux kernel, utilities, development tools, software updates, deployment components, access to a customer resource portal, technical support, and Linux training classes. Current subscribers of MontaVista Linux Professional Edition will have access to version 3.1 at no additional cost.
