Embedded/real-time OSes sales return to growth

The market for embedded/real-time operating systems market is anticipated to grow about 6 percent 2010 according to VDC Research after contracting approximately 6 percent between 2008 and 2009.

The first report of an 18-volume service analyzing the market for embedded software engineering technologies for 2010 service year says that market recovery and growth, projected to vary within certain industry segments, is expected to be tempered in 2010, with growth expected through the forecast period ending 2012.

“The global recession was the primary issue affecting the embedded landscape last year, forcing ISVs to reconsider their strategies, both short- and long-term, to help traverse all the challenges of the market,” said Stephen Balacco, Director of VDC Research's Embedded Software and Tools Practice.

“The market was also impacted by industry consolidation that contributed to uncertainty amongst OEMs in the short-term with respect to their operating system and tool investments that resulted in changes in the competitive landscape.”
