The Internet of Things is an exciting prospect that has the potential to change the way we interact with our environment and society. I’ve seen numerous articles, white papers, and opinion pieces that discuss the scope and the types of gadgets we might see in an IoT world, but not so much on how we are going to get there. This got me thinking about what we need to do to open up embedded microprocessor technologies to really take full advantage of the possibilities IoT offers. As we see the continuing matriculation of virtualization into the embedded world, this trend will produce embedded systems that are smaller and more secure. As it turns out, smaller and more secure intelligent devices are exactly what IoT is about. It’s no stretch to say that embedded virtualization — when viewed outside of the traditional lens and context of the IT equipment world — could turn out to be the essential enabler of more sophisticated IoT products and maybe even entire IoT product categories.
