LONDON FCI has acquired the assets of MergeOptics GmbH (Berlin, Germany) a manufacturer of active optical cables (AOCs) and optical transceivers.
FCI says the acquisition will allow it to leverage MergeOptics' leadership position in AOCs to complement FCI's passive and active copper cables assemblies to address data and communications market applications.
MergeOptics was founded in in September 2000 and has partnerships with several leading German universities and research facilities, including the Heinrich-Hertz-Institute in Berlin. The company had received investment from KTB Technologie Beteiligungsgesellschaft, Deutsche Venture Capital, Earlybird Venture Capital, and Target Partners. In May 2008 it raised €5.3 million in its fourth round of financing led by KTB along with the existing investors Earlybird, Target Partners and DVC.
The company integrates optical components (lasers, modulators and photo diodes) with high-frequency electrical circuits to create compact modules that operate with industry standard optical and electrical interfaces.
