Five-display cell-phone LED driver features 95% efficiency

Linear Technology's LTC3208 is a fully integrated, 850-kHz, low-noise, high-efficiency 1X/1.5X/2X charge pump multi-display LED driver. It can drive up to 17 LED current sources: a one- to four-LED main display, a one- to two-LED subdisplay, a one- to three-LED RGB display, a one- to four-LED camera display, and a one- to four-LED auxiliary display. Each display has digital control with independent dimming and programming using a two-wire I2 C serial interface.

Housed in a 5- by 5-mm QFN package, the LTC3208's input voltage range of 2.9 to 4.5 V is optimized for single-cell Li-Ion cellular applications. Efficiencies when driven from a Li-Ion battery (3.6 V nominal) reach 95% with quiescent current of 250 ╬ťA. The part requires just four capacitors and one resistor to create a solution capable of powering all the LEDs.
