Grants to aid U.K.-U.S. university collaboration

LONDON — Four projects to be funded by the U.K. Department of Trade and Industry will bring together U.K. and U.S. university researchers to build science and innovation bridges with high-tech businesses to increase industrial competitiveness and knowledge transfer.

Each project will receive £1.5 million (about $2.65 million) from the DTI. SETsquared Partnership, a collaboration of the universities of Bath, Bristol, Southampton and Surrey, will work with the University of California campuses at San Diego and Irvine on commercialization of their research. Along with wireless and materials research, the partners will also focus on life sciences and environmental technologies.

The four projects also will address major themes in knowledge transfer, foster academic-industry links, boost innovation skills and provide commercial opportunities, particularly for manufacturing in the U.K.

Another project includes the University of Manchester working with University of Washington, the Northwest Aerospace Alliance, Airbus, Boeing and others on the development of composite materials for use in aircraft design.

Imperial College London will work with the University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center, Oak Ridge National Laboratory and the Georgia Institute of Technology on cancer treatments and energy research.

The University of Cambridge will advance work from their existing collaboration with Massachusetts Institute of Technology to develop entrepreneurial skills among students through development of new courses.

All the collaborations stem from the Cambridge-MIT initiative, building on existing transatlantic links with the aim of strengthening joint approaches to research and innovation.

Lord Sainsbury, U.K. science and innovation minister, said, “Building bridges between world-class universities and high-tech companies in our two countries is an excellent way to generate new opportunities and drive forward innovative ideas.”
