High-efficiency step-up dc-dc converter can reduce system size

Austriamicrosystems has expanded its family of step-up dc-dc converters with the introduction of the AS1325, a high-efficiency step-up part with a fully integrated synchronous rectifier. With a 96% efficiency, the AS1325 is suited for battery powered applications with the need for a 3.3- or 5.0-V supply voltage.

The AS1325 offers an increased output current, providing a supply voltage of 1.5 to 3.5 V (for a 3.3-V output voltage) or 1.5 to 5.0 V (for a 5.0-V output voltage). Supplied with less than 2 V, the AS1325 can deliver a 300-mA output current at 5.0 V output voltage or 185 mA at a 3.3-V output voltage.

The device features a shutdown mode where it draws less than 1 μA. In this mode, the battery is connected directly to the output to enable direct battery feed-through. This lets the input battery to be used as backup or as a real-time clock supply when the converter is off and eliminates the need for an expensive back-up battery. To ensure stable operation, the integrated power-on reset circuitry enables the AS1325 to reset any type of microprocessor after power up to provide a stable start.
