Industrial Ethernet:The basics

In “Industrial Ethernet – the basics,” Mike Fahrion, B&B Electronics, describes the transition of the probalistic, asynchronous and definitely non-determinisitic TCP/IP-based Ethernet protocol over time into a synchronous, deterministic network protocol for a variety real time distributed machine and motor control applications.

This was achieved through its merger with a variety of preexisting proprietary and industry-specific control area networks such as CANopen, Profibus, Ethernet for Control Automation Technology (EtherCAT), Modibus, and Profibus.
