LONDON Alpha Micro Components (Basingstoke, U.K.) has signed an agreement with American fabless semiconductor start-up, Luminary Micro, to distribute its products within the U.K. and Ireland.
Luminary Micro (Austin, Texas) is currently making product information available only under non-disclosure agreement and will publicly release details of its range of ARM architecture-based system-on–chip (SoC) products, on March 27, 2006.
Luminary is targeting applications in the industrial, medical, commercial and consumer markets. The company is headed by Jim Reinhart, Chief Executive Officer, who has 23 years of semiconductor experience in executive and general management, marketing, operations, and engineering, His expertise is in the creation of successful multi-generation embedded processor businesses and startup experience includes SVP of Product Development at ViXS Systems and VP of Product Development at Intrinsity.
He has also worked with Motorola’s microprocessor and microcontroller operations was most recently at Cirrus Logic, where he was involved in the ARM embedded processor and digital video recording platform product lines, contributing to the spin-out of two independent business units.
Luminary's team also includes other former Cirrus execs Chief Technology Officer, Greg North: Chief Marketing Officer, Jean Anne Booth.
Other members of the management team include Arline Nieder, Vice President of Sales, most recently with Winbond as Director of European sales and National Semiconductor, Xicor, Catalyst Semiconductor and startup ISD; Thomas Fedorko, Director of Operations, formerly with Motorola and Oak Technology; and Tom Hegedus, Vice President of Engineering, who was VP of Engineering for Conexant’s Austin Design Center as well as stints with Rockwell, Brooktree, Memorex Telex, General Electric, and Goodyear Aerospace.
Booth, said, “When looking for a distribution partner in the UK, Alpha Micro was our natural choice. Not only do they have an excellent technical team, enabling them to bring OEM products to market sooner but they are also skilled in demand creation. Our new range of products are based on the ARM architecture; it was therefore essential that our UK partner had a thorough knowledge of the technology as well as an understanding of how it can be used with industry specific and embedded applications.”

As well as appointing Alpha Micro for the U.K. and Ireland Luminary has set up a European wide distributor network which includes Atlantik Elektronik (Munich, Germany) covering Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Belgium, Netherlands and Luxemburg; Appletec handling Israel; Esco Italiana (monza, Italy) providing the channel in Italy, Greece and Turkey; PDW Marthel (Bielany Wrocawskie, Poland) appointed for Poland, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Slovenia, Lithuania, Russia; and EQUIN covering Spain.
