CAMBRIDGE, England Plextek has developed a reference design for an automotive in-vehicle telematics unit based on Wavecom technology, as a first step in the partnership between the two companies.
The platform provides a fully customisable and proven telematics solution that is ready to manufacture and therefore provides improved time-to-market. The unit incorporates a range of features in addition to the GSM/GPRS wireless connectivity, including GPS positioning, data processing and storage, an odometer and a smart card reader.
The reference design uses existing blocks of IP from both companies which has reduced the development timescale. On-board features can be remotely upgraded with the latest software and it provides value-added options such as FM radio, CD and MP3 playback, Bluetooth connectivity for hands-free operation and an external audio input. Based on Wavecom modules, the unit is compatible with GSM/GPRS and CDMA, as well as DSRC wireless standards.
The platform is a 1-DIN unit and can be adapted to align with new European Union services, such as the eCAll and eSafety programmes. It is available in two main formats, either with a very low bill of materials (BOM) or with a high sensitivity GPS system.
