QNX Expands Support for Automotive Hardware Platforms


QNX Software Systems announced several board support packages (BSPs) for automotive reference boards and development platforms. Building on extensive support for platforms from Freescale, Fujitsu, Intel, Renesas, Texas Instruments, and others, the new automotive BSPs for the QNX Neutrino RTOS 6.4 include:

Freescale — MPC5121E, i.MX25 ADS, i.MX31 ADS, and i.MX35 ADS

Renesas — SH7723-EVM, SH7786-EVM

Texas Instruments — Jacinto

Developers can download the QNX BSPs immediately from Foundry27, the QNX community web portal. For a list of all current QNX BSPs and the commercial availability of specific BSPs, developers can visit the Foundry27 BSPs and Drivers wiki.

Like other QNX software products, QNX automotive BSPs are developed out in the open on the Foundry27 web portal. As a result, developers can gain immediate access to all the latest BSP code updates and enhancements. Developers can also visit the Foundry27 BSP Project Wiki, where they have the opportunity to join forums and talk directly with BSP developers from QNX Software Systems.

QNX support for automotive BSPs is a key element of QNX CAR, an innovative program that helps automotive suppliers accelerate product prototyping and reduce engineering costs.

With its hard realtime capabilities and fault-tolerant microkernel architecture, the QNX Neutrino RTOS is used by more automakers and suppliers than all other OS platforms combined. The device drivers in QNX BSPs take advantage of microkernel architecture and run outside of the QNX Neutrino kernel, as memory-protected, user-space processes. This approach allows device drivers to be developed and debugged like regular applications, making it easier for automakers and tier one suppliers to customize existing drivers or to write their own drivers.

QNX BSPs are covered by the commercial-friendly Apache 2.0 license, which, unlike the restrictive GPL license, gives developers the option to keep their derivative source code private or to publish it for cooperative development.
