Yesterday at ARM TechCon, Freescale unveiled its Internet of Tomorrow Tour (IoTT) vehicle. The show is the first stop on a planned two-year tour that will bring the company's mobile educational and training facility to venues all across the country.
The IoTT vehicle is an 18-wheel truck, but not like any truck you're likely to encounter. While the trailer section looks much like any other on the road while in transit, when parked it extends side and roof panels to form a two-story apartment with rooftop balcony. This expanded space includes demo areas (including a smart kitchen), a meeting room, and lecture space. The balcony is for enjoying drinks and snacks once you have toured the truck and its nearly 120 demos.
After ARM TechCon, the truck will be hitting the road to take this demo and training venue on the road. Current plans call for a two-year tour, traveling more than 20,000 miles all across the US (sorry, world, it won't be crossing any oceans ). The goal is to bring the IoT and Freescale's technology directly to the companies and creative minds that are making the IoT a reality. This includes visits to customer sites, trade shows, universities, and other, public locations.
The truck is a work in progress, and will change as new opportunities to showcase the IoT, advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS), and software defined networking (the truck's three themes) become available. It will also be a learning exercise for the demonstrators. Already, Freescale reports gaining significant insights into the challenges facing those integrating diverse IoT devices and applications into a unified system — insights that the company will share to help inform the IoT's growth.
For those not able to meet the truck in person, there should soon be opportunities to log into some of the onboard demos and interact with their data streams in real-time when the truck is parked and set up for visitors. Freescale is also looking into making some of the demos (such as the weather station and ADAS systems) available in real-time, even when the truck is on the road.

And keep an eye on the road to see if the truck is going to come to a site near you.
