LONDON Thales UK's air defence business, based in Northern Ireland, has been awarded a £180million contract by the UK MoD for a further tranche of Starstreak High Velocity Missiles (HVM). The company is the prime contractor for Very Short Range Air Defence Systems (VSHORADS).
Starstreak HVM was formally accepted into service in 1997 and will remain in service until 2020.
This order as it maintains the Starstreak system in service as the primary Ground Based Air Defence (GBAD) system for defence against Low Level Air Defence (LLAD) threats.
Millar Crawford, MD Thales Air Defence said, “this major contract will help to sustain the core production capabilities of our business in Belfast and it will also be welcome news for the company's high quality supply chain in Northern Ireland and the rest of the United Kingdom.”
