UK electronics manufacturers looking to expand workforce

LONDON — More employers in the manufacturing sector are looking to recruit staff than lay them off over the final three months of 2004, according to research carried out by NOP and reported in the Manpower Employment Outlook Survey.

The balance of manufacturing employers looking to take on more staff is +21% compared to an average of all UK business sectors of +18%. This figure is the highest in Europe and represents a year-on-year increase of 14%

Employers within the electronics sub-sector are reporting a particularly positive final quarter with a balance of +61% looking to expand their workforce. More subdued outlooks are reported in the chemicals (+10%), automotives (+13%) and textiles (+10%) sub-sectors.

The survey provides a forecast of employer hiring intentions for October to December 2004 with 2,500 UK employers were surveyed in the UK and over 35,000 employers in 19 countries globally.

Employers in transport and communications; finance and business services; and manufacturing, all reported figures above the national average. The agriculture sector is the only sector to expect cutbacks with an outlook of -8% – a decline of nine percentage points over the last quarter and a year-on-year decrease of four percentage points.
