Wales An aerospace business park capable of sustaining several thousand skilled jobs at St. Athan in the Vale of Glamorgan has moved a step closer as the Welsh Development Agency paid £8 million for more than 800 acres of Ministry of Defence land.
The Welsh Assembly Government funded the deal and part of the 823 acres now owned by the WDA will be occupied by a £77million 'super hangar' under construction for the Defence Aviation Repair Agency (DARA).
This project will secure the jobs of the 2,000 people already employed on site by DARA to service military aircraft and should provide an advantage in competing for future work from civil aviation customers.
The remainder of the site could be used by a cluster of aviation sector companies using the present runway and other facilities.
Work by the WDA on a range of studies is nearing completion and the Agency expects to be able to apply in December for planning permission from the Vale of Glamorgan Council.
